Knowledge Network Recap: Combatting Banking & Financial Fraud
Great turnout for this morning’s CFO Knowledge Network discussion in New Haven on “Combatting Banking & Financial Fraud.” Especially impressive to see so many financial executives join us in the middle of August.
Thank you to Jeff Rossi (CBIZ) for moderating and to John Gover (Cross Insurance), Katie Choromanski (M&T Bank) and Edward Heath (Robinson+Cole) for sharing their perspectives.
A few themes that stood out:
• Most fraud incidents are driven by human failure rather than technology failure. Creating a culture where employees feel comfortable pausing and asking questions before a wire or payment is sent is critical.
• Slow down. Fraudsters create urgency for a reason. Taking the extra time to verify a payment request can be one of the most effective controls.
• Training needs to be ongoing. Semi-annual security awareness training and tools like KnowBe4 can help keep fraud risk top of mind and reduce human error.
• Have a breach response policy in place before you need it. Knowing who to call and what steps to take can make a significant difference when an incident occurs.
• New CFOs can be particularly susceptible as they learn new relationships, processes, and approval protocols.
Appreciate everyone who attended and shared perspectives.
