VSP Celebrates 25 Years in Business: A Look Back – 2008 to 2013

25 Years - VSP - 2001-2007-2

Economic Backdrop

By the fall of 2008, the global financial system was under real strain. I still remember driving home on a Friday in October, listening to CNBC, and hearing serious discussion about whether ATM machines might even be accessible by Monday. With three children under the age of two at the time, it was a frightening moment that brought the uncertainty into sharp focus.

What followed was the Great Recession, defined by frozen credit markets, widespread layoffs, and a slow, uneven recovery. Terms like “too big to fail,” “stress tests,” and eventually “green shoots” entered the everyday vocabulary as stability gradually, and cautiously, returned.

Inside the Recruiting Industry

The Great Recession reshaped the recruiting landscape. Hiring slowed, searches were scrutinized, and not every firm made it through. The downturn was painful, but it tested the fundamentals. Firms built on volume struggled, while those grounded in relationships, judgment, and trust were able to endure.

This period also marked the rise of LinkedIn as a serious force in recruiting. In 2011, the company went public, and its S-1 registration statement noted a belief that its platform could be “more cost-effective and more efficient than traditional recruiting approaches, such as hiring third-party search firms.” It wasn’t the first technological change to challenge our industry, and it won’t be the last. What remained constant then, as now, was the enduring value of experience, relationships, discretion, and long-term partnership.

Featured Placement

In 2009, we recruited Dan Harris to Reynolds & Rowella (R&R), a Fairfield County, Connecticut-based regional accounting firm, as an Audit Director. Dan joined at a pivotal moment in the firm’s history. He was brought in to help expand the audit practice, as the firm had historically been more tax-focused. Dan was also part of the firm’s long-term succession planning as several partners approached retirement over the coming decade.

Dan quickly distinguished himself and was promoted to Partner shortly thereafter. He was part of a broader generation of leaders that Vision Search Partners helped recruit into the organization, supporting the firm’s growth and long-term continuity. Today, four of the firm’s six partners were originally recruited into the firm by Vision Search Partners.
